My dad did the same, with the addition of breaking a pomegranate in front of the store. Happy New Year to you all!
what is the significance of the pomegranate ?

No idea about the pomegranate. I asked him about it once and he said his boss back in Turkey used to do it too. I’m assuming it has something to do with renewal or cleansing of evil.
